Russia confirms 10,000+ COVID-19 cases over past day

On Friday, Russia reported 10,598 new confirmed cases of the novel coronavirus, pushing its nationwide case tally to 262,843.

Russia’s coronavirus taskforce said 113 people had died over the last 24 hours, bringing the official death toll to 2,418.

Most of the cases (4,748), were recorded in Moscow.

The Kremlin this week eased a national lockdown to slow the spread of the virus, despite a steady rise in numbers that has brought Russia to third place in a global tally of infections, behind Spain.

The novel coronavirus (COVID-19) emerged in late 2019 in China’s Hubei province, and the virus has spread to 212 countries and territories since then.

To date, COVID-19 cases surpassed 4,540,000 globally, resulting in more than 1,711,000 recoveries and over 303,000 deaths.

On February 11, the WHO officially named the 2019 novel coronavirus (2019-nCoV) as COVID-19, and on March 11, declared it a pandemic.
