“Seven years ago, we had the idea to promote friendship between Azerbaijan and Russia in the information space, to support it in every possible way, and to inform Russian citizens about Azerbaijan and how we can be friends. And over the course of these seven years, we managed to achieve a lot,” Russian expert Daria Grevtsova said at an online conference on the theme “Anniversary of Azerbaijani statehood: achievements, problems, cooperation with the Russian Federation,” Report informs.

“I think that now in Russia, everyone knows Azerbaijan and how interesting it is. The number of tourist flows from Russia and Azerbaijan proves it. A huge number of events were held, including the annual Russian-Azerbaijani Forum, which is held in February every year and in which the State Duma deputies and prominent experts take part. Last year, participants participated in the event dedicated to the tragic events of the Khojaly genocide and laid flowers at the monument. This was a very significant event for Russian society. It was also broadcasted on Russian TV channels. Of course, Azerbaijan is developing very rapidly. What I saw when I visited there for the first time in 2009 is very different from what it is in 2020,” she said.

Touching upon the Nagorno-Karabakh problem, Grevtsova noted that the solution to this problem is essential for Russia, too: “Russia absolutely does not need conflicts on its borders, the peaceful existence of neighbors is a priority. We all understand that Russia supports Azerbaijan’s position on this issue. Let us recall a recent statement by Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov and his proposal to sign an agreement. The Armenian side refused to sign it, although everything had already been discussed and agreed. This inadequacy of the Armenian side is seen in Russia.”

The politician also noted that it is extremely important to inform the European community about this issue: “Several years ago I spoke at the Forum in Poland with the theme of regional conflicts and touched upon the conflict in Nagorno-Karabakh. Imagine, half the hall was completely unaware of seven occupied areas around Nagorno-Karabakh. It surprised them very much. I know that a lot is being done by both President Ilham Aliyev and First Vice President Mehriban Aliyeva to inform the world community through major events such as the Baku Humanitarian Forum and other global forums. Now, everything happens online, and we can organize such events with the participants of those forums. The deputies from European parliaments can directly deliver necessary information to their colleagues, and consequently, they can demonstrate an objective position during the settlement of the conflict.”
