Estonian president congratulates Ilham Aliyev

President of the Republic of Estonia Kersti Kaljulaid has sent a congratulatory letter to Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev on the occasion of May 28 – Republic Day.

The congratulation message reads:

“I wish to convey my sincere congratulations to you and to the people of Azerbaijan on the occasion of the National Day of the Republic of Azerbaijan on May 28. I wish you and the people of Azerbaijan prosperity and well-being.

I would like to offer words of support to the people of Azerbaijan as we all confront the challenges caused by the COVID-19 pandemic. It illustrates how dependent we are of each other and indicates that solutions can only be found in close cooperation. I hope our countries continue to work together to enhance cooperation in the areas of mutual interest both bilaterally as well as in international organizations such as the United Nations. Let me also stress that Estonia is and will be a strong supporter of the Eastern Partnership and continues to encourage a closer relationship between the European Union and its partners in the neighborhood.”

On May 28, Azerbaijan celebrates the Republic Day.

The 1917 Russian Revolution put an end to the rule of the Romanovs and saw the collapse of the Russian Empire. Shortly after that, on May 28, 1918, patriotic leaders in Azerbaijan founded the Democratic Republic of Azerbaijan.

The Democratic Republic of Azerbaijan was the first democratic republic in the East. It was a parliamentary state, had a flag, an anthem, and an army.

The Republic Day is celebrated as a state holiday on May 28 since 1990.
