Indian army on high alert amid tension on border

India’s military has declared a state of high alert on China’s border amid rising tensions, Report says, citing RIA Novosti.

Military men are also forbidden to leave for retirement in the Indian region of Ladakh, located on the border with China.

On June 15, the fighting occurred in the precipitous, rocky terrain of the strategically important Galwan Valley, which lies between China’s Tibet and India’s Ladakh.

Indian media say soldiers engaged in direct hand-to-hand combat, with some “beaten to death”. During the fight, one newspaper reported, others fell or were pushed into a river.

China has accused India of crossing the border onto the Chinese side. Its foreign ministry said it wanted to avoid further clashes but gave no further details.

The clash in the Ladakh region Monday — during which Indian officials said neither side fired any shots — was the first deadly confrontation between India and China since 1975. Experts said it would be difficult for the two nations to ease heightened tensions.
