Azerbaijani Permanent Representative addresses letter to UN Chief

Permanent Representative of Azerbaijan to the United Nations Yashar Aliyev has sent a letter to the UN Secretary-General António Guterres.

In his letter, Aliyev noted that on the Permanent Mission of Azerbaijan’s initiative to the United Nations, the UN General Assembly adopted eight resolutions entitled “Missing persons,” the Azerbaijani Foreign Ministry posted on Twitter.

The documents reaffirm obligations under international humanitarian law and call States parties to armed conflict to take all appropriate measures to prevent enforced disappearances in connection with armed conflict.

Aliyev also informed the Secretary-General about the Azerbaijanis, who went missing during the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict.

“The continuing aggression by Armenia against Azerbaijan has led to the temporary occupation of a significant part of Azerbaijan’s territory, including the Nagorno-Karabakh region, the seven adjacent districts, and some exclaves. The war has claimed tens of thousands of people, ruined cities, and livelihoods in my country and resulted in the forcible expulsion of more than 1 million Azerbaijanis from their homes and properties. Armenian armed forces committed serious violations of international humanitarian law amounting to war crimes, crimes against humanity and acts of genocide in the course of the aggression,” he stressed in the letter.
