China: More than 30 million affected by floods

China’s national observatory has renewed its yellow alert, the third-highest, for rainstorms, while the downpour is forecast to continue in large parts of eastern and central China, Report says, citing TASS.

The worst affected provinces were Jiangxi, Hubei, Hunan, Guangdong, Sichuan, Guizhou, the Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region and the Central city of Chongqing. The authorities evacuated more than 1.7 million residents from the disaster areas, and more than 600,000 people are still in need of humanitarian assistance.

A total of 140 people have died or are missing, and 30.20 million have been affected due to floods in 27 provincial-level regions, including east China’s Anhui and Jiangxi provinces as of 2:00 p.m. local time Thursday, the Ministry of Emergency Management said.

As of Thursday, 1.721 million people were relocated, and 22 000 houses collapsed. 

The floods have caused direct economic losses worth 61.79 billion yuan (some 8.81 billion U.S. dollars).
