Chinese companies intend to enter world’s largest LNG project in Qatar

Sinopec and PetroChina wish to take part in the world’s largest gas liquefaction project in Qatar.

Report informs with reference to the Gulf News that Chinese companies are holding talks with the Qatari state corporation Qatar Petroleum.

This is an LNG production project based on the North Field East Project (NFE) in Qatar. Earlier it was reported that the new capacity will allow Qatar to increase the production of liquefied gas from 77 million tons to 110 million tons per year. The enterprise will produce not only LNG but also LPG (liquefied petroleum gases), ethane, sulfur, and helium.

The launch is scheduled for the fourth quarter of 2025, with an initial production capacity of 1.4 million barrels of oil equivalent per day. The enterprise will be based on four lines, each with a capacity of 8 million tons, and related facilities. In the future, Qatar plans to increase LNG production on the basis of the southern part of the North Field South Project (NFS), which will allow increasing the LNG production to 126 million tons per year by 2027.

The project cost is estimated at $28.75 billion. Qatar Petroleum noted in February that this would be one of the largest energy investments in recent years. Sinopec and PetroChina are ready to take part in financing in exchange for shares in the project, Gulf News says.

Earlier Qatar Petroleum signed a long-term contract for the supply of LNG to China.
