Friday Wrap-up: Talysh Council, ECHR decision, and domestic violence report

Over 100 women sought help because of domestic violence in 2021 in Azerbaijan

The State Committee for Family, Women and Children and Problems has announced the number of appeals to them in the first six months of 2021. 148 cases of domestic violence were reported.

in the first six months of 2021, appeals were considered for 22 victims of domestic violence.

In their statements, women’s rights activists have repeatedly stated that the relevant agencies have not done their job properly in cases of domestic violence in Azerbaijan. They blame the state for deaths as a result of domestic violence.

Gender activist Gulnara Mehdiyeva says that in July 2021 alone, nine women were killed in Azerbaijan by either their husbands or boyfriends. According to her, if the relevant agencies would respond to such complaints in a timely manner and take necessary measures, less women would die as a result.
