The United States says it supports democratic processes in Azerbaijan

During the visit, he met with representatives of civil society, activists, lawyers, journalists, as well as representatives of political parties.

The statement came from the US Embassy in Azerbaijan spread.

Political activist Bakhtiyar Hajiyev, who attended the meeting, said that an hour-long discussion with Kara MacDonald on “topics of mutual interest” was conducted.

According to him, the meeting touched upon the events in the region and especially in the country. Thus, the problems in the field of human rights faced by individual activists, journalists and various groups were openly discussed:

“We had a wide exchange of views on the steps to be taken by the Biden administration in the future and our expectations. The diplomat also shared US President Biden’s position on democracy and human rights in foreign policy.

The embassy announced that Kara MacDonald will be in Azerbaijan on June 13-15:

“During his visit, he will meet with government officials, democracy and human rights activists, representatives of independent media and political parties.”

The embassy said in a statement that the diplomat recommended that the United States strengthen respect for fundamental rights and freedoms, including freedom of expression, assembly and association.

He also noted that the United States supports efforts to develop democratic processes and will stand by Azerbaijanis in these matters.
