Turkey agrees Sweden and Finland to join NATO

The three countries have signed a joint statement to fight terrorism

It is reported that the memorandum was signed by the Turkish Foreign Minister Mevlüt ÇavuşoğluSigned by Finnish Foreign Minister Pekka Haavisto and Swedish Foreign Minister Anne Linde.

NATO The signing ceremony, which took place at the IFEMA Exhibition Center in Madrid, where the summit was held, was also attended by the heads of all three states.

In a joint statement, Finland and Sweden openly condemned the attacks on Turkey by terrorist organizations:

“Finland and Sweden are committed to preventing the activities of the PKK and all other terrorist organizations and individuals. TurkeyFinland and Sweden have decided to increase cooperation to prevent the activities of terrorist organizations.

The statement said that Finland and Sweden will ban fundraising and recruitment activities of the PKK and all its affiliates:

“Sweden and Finland will increase cooperation in the defense industry against Turkey by lifting embargo restrictions.”

Including in the future NATO Finland and Sweden, which are allies, will not support organizations designated as PYD / YPG and FETO in Turkey:

“Sweden confirms that the new and more effective” Terrorism Law “will come into force on July 1.”

NATO Secretary General J. Stoltenberg also called for Sweden and Finland to join NATO Turkey He said that he had reached an agreement with Ankara and that Ankara’s concerns would be resolved.

On May 18, 2022, Finland and Sweden officially applied for NATO membership.

NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg praised the move.

“NATO welcomes the submission of applications by Sweden and Finland to join the alliance and guarantees that the necessary issues will be resolved as soon as possible,” he said.

He said that with the accession of Sweden and Finland to the Alliance, the security of the Baltic countries will be further strengthened.

Turkey opposed the membership of Sweden and Finland.

Ankara claimed that both Scandinavian countries did not support Turkey’s fight against terrorism, but instead supported the PKK’s Syrian wing, the YPG.

Ankara has openly stated that both Sweden and Finland have embraced PKK members.
