“Azerbaijan has made significant contribution to historic victory

First Vice-President of the Republic of Azerbaijan Mehriban Aliyeva has congratulated the Azerbaijani people on the occasion of 9 May – the Day of Victory over fascism.

In a post on her official Instagram page, Mehriban Aliyeva says:

“Dear veterans!

I convey to you and through you to the whole Azerbaijani people my sincere congratulations on the occasion of 9 May – the Day of Victory over fascism!

For you and our nation as a whole, this holiday has always been of particular importance. Our country has made a significant contribution to the historic victory, and this has always evoked a sense of pride and joy in every Azerbaijani. I know that you have been impatiently looking forward to this day this year. Because this year marks the 75th anniversary of the Great Victory. Both our President and I have always met with you on 9 May and celebrated this significant date together. Unfortunately, due to the quarantine regime applied in our country in connection with the coronavirus pandemic that has gripped the world, we cannot meet with you this year.

Your valor, courage, and bravery are a true example of patriotism. We love you very much! We are proud of you! Happy Great Victory Day!”

Today, 75 years have passed since the victory over German fascism.

The Second World War claimed more than 60 million lives.

Azerbaijanis made great sacrifices both on the front line and the rear during the war. Baku oil has an essential role in ensuring victory. 420,000 out of 650,000 Azerbaijani citizens did not return from war. For their great courage, 43 Azerbaijanis were awarded the title of Hero of the Soviet Union. While 30 were awarded the Order of “Glory” in all three degrees. The names of Hero of the Soviet Union for twice Hazi Aslanov, Heroes of the Soviet Union Israfil Mammadov, Aslan Vezirov, Adil Guliyev, Ziya Bunyadov, Garay Asadov, Melik Maharramov, Mehdi Huseynzade and generals Mahmud Abilov, Akim Abbasov, Tarlan Aliyarbeyov, Hajibaba Zeynalov and many of others written in our people’s history with golden letters for their bravery.

Əziz veteranlar! 9 May – Faşizm üzərində Qələbə Günü münasibətilə sizə və sizin simanızda bütün Azərbaycan xalqına ən səmimi təbriklərimi yetirirəm. Наша страна внесла весомый вклад в историческую победу и это всегда вызывало в каждом азербайджанце чувство гордости и отрады. Я знаю, что в этом году вы ждали этот день с особым нетерпением. Потому что в этом году отмечается 75-летие Великой Победы. И наш Президент, и я 9 Мая всегда встречались с вами, вместе отмечали эту знаменательную дату. К сожалению, из-за карантинного режима, применяемого в нашей стране в связи с потрясшей весь мир пандемией коронавируса, в этом году мы не можем с вами встретиться. Ваша доблесть, мужество и отвага являются истинным примером патриотизма. Мы вас очень любим, мы гордимся вами! С Днём Великой Победы!
