Baku to host EURO 2020 matches

Baku, one of the EURO 2020 host cities, has assured the UEFA to host the tournament, the European governing body of football told RIA Novosti.

Earlier, The Times reported that UEFA had postponed a meeting of the Executive Committee scheduled for May 27 since London does not provide a guarantee to host the European Championship.

“UEFA is in constant contact with the 12 host cities. Further information will be provided in the coming days,” the body said in a statement.

The matches of the 2020 Euro Cup were initially scheduled to take place at stadiums in 12 different cities across Europe, namely in London (England), Munich (Germany), Rome (Italy), Baku (Azerbaijan), Saint Petersburg (Russia), Bucharest (Romania), Amsterdam (The Netherlands), Dublin (Ireland), Bilbao (Spain), Budapest (Hungary), Glasgow (Scotland) and Copenhagen (Denmark) between June 12 and July 12, 2020.

On March 17, UEFA decided to postpone the 2020 UEFA Euro Cup for precisely one year as a preventive measure against COVID-19. The championship is now scheduled to be held between June 11 and July 11, 2021. The European governing body of football also announced on March 13, the suspension of the Champions League and Europa League matches.
