Permanent Rep: UN High Commissioner should urge Armenia to live up to its obligations

Currently Azerbaijan is actively engaged in the restoration of its liberated territories to ensure safe return of the displaced Azerbaijani population. However, the mines planted by Armenia in Azerbaijan continue to threaten lives of population of Azerbaijan, Permanent Representative of Azerbaijan to the UN Office and other international organizations in Geneva, Ambassador Vagif Sadigov said at the 47th regular session of the Human Rights Council, Report informs.

“We call upon the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights to urge Armenia to live up to its obligations of the international law and to immediately hand over the maps of minefields to Azerbaijan,” he noted.

“Azerbaijan is keen to further develop cooperation with the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights through constructive dialogue and based on the new realities, which have emerged in our region after signing of the trilateral statement of 10 November 2020, putting an end to the nearly 30-year conflict between Armenia and Azerbaijan. These new realities have to be taken into account by the Office in particular while referring to communications in the territories of Azerbaijan,” he added.

The diplomat reminded that respect for territorial integrity and non-interference in the internal affairs of countries are important principles enshrined in the UN Charter.
