Georgian president addresses nation: Period of civil confrontation is over

Today, the country needs calm so that the October 2 elections will be held in a transparent, fair, and peaceful environment, Georgian President Salome Zourabichvili said.

Report‘s local bureau informs that, according to her, it was unclear whether reports of former President Mikheil Saakashvili’s return to Georgia were true or false.

The head of state noted that the government’s reaction to the return of Saakashvili was incorrect: “Such a reaction is not expected by society. Comments should come from government agencies, not the party. They must calm the public down by proving the lie with facts.”

Zourabichvili said that the government should prevent all attempts to destabilize the pre-election environment and avoid polarization: “The government is responsible for creating a peaceful and free election environment. The period of civil confrontation has passed, and any responsible person should not play with fire if he thinks about his country and its future. I think there will be no confrontation because our citizens are more vigilant than politicians. I am for the constitutional order and a peaceful future. I urge everyone to be responsible. The stability of the country is a common achievement that we will never give up.”
