Scientists predict end of pandemic due to omicron strain

The emergence of the omicron strain means that the most acute period of the pandemic is drawing to a close, South African scientists say.

Report informs, citing Bloomberg, that a group of physicians analyzed the records of 466 patients who fell ill in the current wave of COVID-19 and 3,976 previous cases of the disease in the hospital where the omicron strain was first recorded.

“The wave of infection moved at an unprecedented speed and caused much milder diseases than more early strains. If this pattern persists and repeats around the world, we are likely to see a complete separation of morbidity and mortality,” the authors of the study said.
