Latvian, Azerbaijani parliamentary speakers discuss issues of bilateral co-op
Latvia and Azerbaijan are united by friendly relations and dynamic parliamentary dialogue, which is characterized by close ties between cooperation groups, we are interested in developing successful interstate cooperation, Speaker of the Latvian Saeima Ināra Mūrniece told a meeting with Azerbaijani Speaker Sahiba Gafarova, who is on an official visit to Latvia, Report informs.
The parliamentary Speakers focused on strengthening relations between Azerbaijan and the European Union. Sahiba Gafarova confirmed that building relations with the European Union (EU) is currently one of the priorities of Azerbaijan’s foreign policy.
Speaker of the Saeima stressed that, according to Latvia, the Eastern Partnership initiative is an important mechanism for improving relations between Azerbaijan and the EU, emphasizing that cooperation should be based on projects that meet the interests of the country.
Discussing the current security situation, the parties agreed that the primary task of the foreign policy of each country is to ensure peace and security in their countries and in the immediate region. Ināra Mūrniece expressed her country’s support for stable and peaceful relations in the South Caucasus.
The Speaker of the Milli Majlis invited the Speaker of the Saeima of Latvia to visit Azerbaijan.
