Division over Ukraine in Italy’s largest party

Italy’s largest political party, the 5 Star Movement, has split over arms supplies to Ukraine
Italy’s largest political party, the 5 Star Movement, has split over arms supplies to Ukraine.
Italian Foreign Minister Luigi Di Mayo has left the party faction.
According to Italian media, the majority of the party led by former Prime Minister Giuseppe Conte believes that the supply of weapons to Ukraine will prolong the conflict.
Di Mayo, one of the most ardent supporters of Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky among European politicians, disagrees.
The Foreign Minister said that the decision to leave the party faction was not easy.
On which side of history
According to him, his party members “should have long ago decided which side of history – the side of the attacked Ukraine or the aggressor Russia.”
The Il Post writes that 62 deputies, including 11 senators, may leave the faction together with Di Mayo.
Earlier, NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg said in an interview with the German publication Bild am Sonntag that the war in Ukraine could last for years.
He called on his allies to continue supporting Kiev in this war.
According to Stoltenberg, the allies will decide at the NATO summit in Madrid to call Russia a “security threat” rather than a “partner.”
The summit is also expected to decide on the supply of more weapons to Ukraine.
