Russia will keep the gas pipeline to the European Union closed

Russia to Europe gas although it was reported that the main pipeline carrying out the transport would be restarted on Saturday, this did not happen. This has increased concerns about energy supply in the continent this winter.

Russian state energy company Gazprom said that a leak was registered in the North Stream-1 pipeline, as a result of which the pipeline gas it was decided to suspend the transportation for an indefinite period.

According to Gazprom, Russia the operation of the pipeline transporting gas to Germany was suspended for three days for the purpose of repair.

Europe Russia gas using the factor Ukraine accused Europe of blackmail within the framework of the war, but Moscow rejected these claims.

Russia Energy after the occupation of Ukraine prices has increased sharply and the current shortage of gas supply may lead to further increase in prices.

The fear among European families that heating costs will be more expensive this winter is growing every day.

Great Britain can also suffer from it. Though, Britain does not depend on the Nord Stream-1 pipeline for its gas needs, the interruption in the use of the pipeline may also increase the wholesale prices of blue fuel. This will lead to a spiraling increase in energy prices.

Faisal Islam, BBC’s economics editor, called the postponement of the Nord Stream-1 pipeline “a very dangerous trend”. According to him, Russia even during the Cold War, it did not stop the flow of blue fuel to Europe.

Europe increases gas reserves

Disagreement with Russia Europe forced countries to fill gas supply systems. In June, the reserve in Germany’s gas storages was below 50 percent, but today this figure is 84 percent.

As a result, natural gas last week prices although it decreased at the international level, it was higher than the general price standard.

Europe is trying to reduce its dependence on Russian energy and minimize Moscow’s ability to finance the war, but this goal cannot be achieved quickly.

European Union The President of the Council, Charles Michel, said that Russia’s step was “unfortunately not a surprise”.

“The use of gas as a weapon will not change the approach of the European Union. We will accelerate our steps towards energy independence. Our duty is to protect our citizens and of Ukraine is to support independence,” he tweeted

Moscow has denied accusations that it uses energy supplies as an economic weapon against Western countries that support Ukraine.

Russia, on the other hand, linked the extension of the repair of the North Stream-1 pipeline with the sanctions of the western countries and blamed them for what happened. European Union called it an “excuse”.

Germany’s network coordinator Bundesnetzagentur said official Berlin was well prepared for risks posed by Russia’s gas supply, but urged citizens and companies to reduce gas consumption.

Gazprom decided to stop using the pipeline after the G7 countries set the highest price limit for Russian energy products in order to support Ukraine.

To the countries of the Big 7 USACanada, Great Britain, Franceincludes Germany, Italy and Japan.

The price ceiling they introduced means that these countries will only buy Russian oil and gas shipped by sea at or below the agreed price.

Russia has said that it will not export energy to countries that join the price cap.

The daily export capacity of the North Stream-1 pipeline, which transports gas from the shores of St. Petersburg to the northeastern part of Germany, is 170 million cubic meters.

Gazprom is the largest shareholder of the pipeline managed by Shimal Akhiny AG.

Although Germany initially supported the Nord Stream-2 project, which was built parallel to this pipeline, the implementation of the project was stopped after Russia invaded Ukraine.

Energy the effect of prices on unemployment

Gazprom said that the pipeline accident was recorded at the Portovaya compressor station, and the turbine is currently being repaired by workers from the German company Siemens.

According to the information provided by the enterprise, it is possible to prevent the gas leakage recorded in the motors only in special repair facilities, which is currently impossible to do as a result of Western sanctions.

Siemens stated that “such leaks do not actually affect the operation of the pipeline, and gas transportation through the pipeline can be continued. This is a normal repair procedure.”

It is not the first time that the activity of the Nord Stream-1 pipeline has been suspended since Russia invaded Ukraine.

Transportation through the Gazprom pipeline in July 10 had stopped completely for a day, and this decision was justified by “repair break”. Later, gas exports continued, but the volume was reduced.

Speaking to the BBC, Swedish economist and energy analyst Cornelia Meyer said that the suspension of gas supply will have a significant impact on unemployment and energy prices.

“As a result of this, compared to the same period last year, gas in Europe prices 4 times more expensive. But the price increase is not only observed in blue fuel, which means that the cost of living will increase significantly. “Gas is just an accelerator here because it’s used in many industrial processes, so rising gas prices will affect jobs and the cost of living,” the economist said.
