The first group of migrant workers, including Tajik workers, was brought to Mariupol in early summer. At that time, the local government appointed by Russia began to rebuild the destroyed city. Much of Mariupol, including many residential areas and public buildings, was left in ruins after three months of Russian bombardment.

Most of the workers were recruited in Russia, where millions of Central Asians work.

“Here we repair damaged buildings, replace windows and doors, put new roofs. They provide meals 3 times a day, and our companies also provide accommodation.” – says Sharifov.

But Sharifov is next of his salary he says he doesn’t know how long it will be. According to him, although he does not feel in danger in Mariupol, his family in Tajikistan is worried about his work in Ukraine.

It is not known how many Tajiks are in Mariupol. However, according to Sharifov, “Restavratsiya” company alone has sent 110 workers here, and most of them are Tajik. Some workers say that 120 Tajik workers work in the city.

Many Tajik migrants working in Russia say they have received offers from construction companies but turned them down because they did not want to risk their lives.

In a video sent from Mariupol, Tajik workers warn other migrants about empty promises: “It’s all a lie. Don’t come here.”
