Thus, at least 3 gigawatts of additional transmission capacity will be created in the first phase of export from Azerbaijan.” -I. Aliyev said.

Energy transition

Energy transition is one of the most discussed issues in the global energy system in recent years. We are talking about using energy as a whole: oil, coal, natural gas It is about reducing the share of traditional resources and instead increasing the share of renewable energy resources (solar, wind and other alternative energy sources).

At the event “Growth prospects of a changing global economy” held in Baku in September 2022 Azerbaijan Energy Minister Parviz Shahbazov said that “Azerbaijan is one of the few countries that is ready for energy transition today”.

The interest in the energy transition is related not only to economic motives, but also to climate change and decarbonization goals.

In accordance with the terms of the Paris Agreement, the European Union, which is the world’s largest energy importing region, aims to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 40 percent by 2030 compared to 1990. In the middle of the 21st century – in 2050, it is aimed to achieve zero waste.

European Union region Azerbaijan is the main energy partner. On the other hand, Azerbaijan itself joined the Paris Agreement. National Parliament ratified the agreement in 2016, and the country committed to reducing greenhouse gas emissions by 30 percent by 2030 compared to 1990 levels.

What is the share of alternative energy in Azerbaijan?

According to official figures, last year in the country total 27 billion 856 million kilowatt hours electricity was produced. 94 percent of it was accounted for by thermal power plants. In other words, the absolute majority of electricity production in the country is natural gas provided at his expense.

The electricity produced in hydropower plants was 4.6 percent of the country’s total electricity production. The share of renewable energy sources (wind, solar, biomass, etc.) in electricity production in Azerbaijan was only 1.2 percent.
