Azerbaijan The king of the cuisine is pilaf. Such an event holiday, there cannot be a meeting without pilaf on the table. It will be the same on the upcoming New Year holiday. You need rice to cook pilaf. The price of knot has increased. We can clearly observe this price increase in markets.

The information provided by the State Statistics Committee also shows that the price of rice has increased this year compared to last year. The average price of 1 kilogram of long rice increased from 3.98 manats to 4.45 manats compared to October last year. With this, the average price increased by 56 kopecks, i.e. by 14.3 percent. Compared to last year, local long rice increased by 82 kopecks, i.e. 19.4% and amounted to 5.05 manats. But what is the reason for this pre-holiday price increase?

Economist Parviz Heydarov said that the price of rice started to rise from the beginning of the year.

“Local rice production is mainly in Astara, Lankaran, Masalli. But Azerbaijan can meet only 15 percent of its rice demand. We buy the rest from India, Pakistan and other countries. These countries are at the forefront of rice cultivation in the world. They also have rice village It occupies an important place in agricultural production, the cost is low. We have 15 percent, which meets local demand, and it costs more. Therefore, we cannot reduce the price of local products. The reason for the high cost is the problems in irrigating the rice, labor force is more expensive.”

P. Heydarov noted that the price of rice imported from India is more expensive than that imported from Pakistan:

“In order to bring in more of the cheap, the Cabinet of Ministers decided in November that rice imported from Pakistan will be imported until December 31, 2027. customs from the fee free be done. That decision will enter into force after one month. Taking this fee in the market prices will be able to keep it stable to a certain extent. It will not make it cheaper, it will prevent the price increase.”

According to the economist, on the development of rice farming in Azerbaijan 2018– There is a relevant state program for 2025:

“To meet the rice demand of the country’s population at the maximum level at the expense of local production, to minimize imports as much as possible, to develop the rice processing industry and village expanding the employment level of the population in this field is the goal of the program.

P. Heydarov noted that our country has the ability to meet its needs up to 30-40 percent:

“We have the opportunity to increase production in the southern regions and other areas. If we can meet 35-40 percent of the domestic demand, the dependence on imports will decrease. Then never from Pakistan rice customs there is no need to take the fee.”

According to the expert, certain things should be done to increase our rice production:

“Even if we say that our labor force is expensive, our villagers cannot get the necessary income from this field. It is necessary to give incentives and support to the peasants. Received program with quality execution should be done. Abundant water is the main condition for increasing local production and development of rice farming in Azerbaijan. Therefore, problems in the irrigation system should be eliminated. There is also a need for cheap and willing labor force.

Village Agricultural expert Jafar Ibrahimli said that one of the reasons why our local rice is expensive is the low production.

Azerbaijan the rice produced is about 15% of the country’s annual needs20 is the percentage. We import the rest from abroad. As the yield of rice in Azerbaijan is low and the cost of production is higher, this causes local production to be relatively expensive in the domestic market as well.”

C. İbrahimli noted that the import price was affected by processes in the world:

“Considering that inflation affects all goods along with product transportation, delivery and other costs, there is an increase in the price of rice compared to last year. Simply, in previous years, products were imported from Russia. But in the current year Russia imports have decreased because of restrictions on the sale of this type of products. That is, import Russia decrease by and bringing from other markets, the increase in transportation costs also causes the price to rise.”

According to the expert, the price of rice is not expected to increase further:

“This sector receives more subsidies than other sectors. For example, a subsidy of 360 manat is given for 1 hectare. Foundation food the state is interested in increasing the production of this product because of its substance. But available land, water, weather given the circumstances, our capacity to increase the volume is limited. Cropland and productivity are expected to increase in the coming years. But it will not be possible to reduce our imports. We will still be dependent on imports. The rise and fall of the price of the product will be influenced more by the processes in the international world, that is, in the foreign markets, the rise and fall of the price of food products. But in 2022, there is a price adjustment for all products in the world markets, unlike previous years. Therefore, I do not expect an increase in the price of this product.” (Caspian)
