“Despite concerted efforts and hard-won gains by some, 155 countries have not made significant progress against corruption since 2012. Moreover, world peace has been deteriorating for 15 years. Corruption is both the main cause and result of this.”

Corruption undermines the ability of governments to protect people and erodes public trust, making it increasingly difficult to control security threats, the report says.

On the other hand, conflict creates opportunities for corruption and undermines governments’ efforts to stop it:

“Even countries with high CPI scores play a role in the threat posed by corruption to global security. “For decades, they have welcomed dirty money from abroad, allowing kleptocrats to increase their wealth, power and destructive geopolitical ambitions.”

CPI believes that leaders can fight corruption and promote peace at the same time.

Governments must make room for public involvement in decision-making, from activists and business owners to marginalized communities and young people: “In democratic societies, people can raise their voices to root out corruption and demand a safer world for us all.”

In conclusion, it is reported that although each country faces different corruption problems, this year’s index reveals the ongoing stagnation in the world:

“Countries of the region with the most points, Western Europe and European Union has been stagnant for more than a decade or has declined in the last five years. Illegal influence over decision-making, weak enforcement of integrity guarantees and threats to the rule of law continue to undermine the effectiveness of governments.

“Countries with low scores at the other end of the index are not able to make serious progress. Restrictions and attacks on civil space and fundamental freedoms continue as multiple crises threaten security and stability, democracy and human rights in many parts of the Americas, Eastern Europe and Central Asia and southern Africa,” the report said.
