PARIS, Feb 3 (Reuters) – Paco Rabanne, the Spanish-born designer best known for his 1960s metallic ensembles and space-age designs, has died aged 88.
The death of Paco Rabanne, born Francisco Rabaneda y Cuervo, in Portsall, Brittany, has been confirmed by Puig, a spokesman for the Spanish group that controlled the Paco Rabanne label he launched two decades ago.
“A key figure in fashion, it was a bold, revolutionary and provocative vision, delivered through a unique aesthetic,” said Marc Puig, Chairman and CEO of Puig.
Born in 1934 in a village in the Basque region of Spain, Rabanne in France grew up and studied architecture at the School of Fine Arts in Paris.
She began her career sketching high-end bags and shoes, before moving into fashion, designing clothing and jewelry from unconventional materials such as metal and plastic.
His first collection, which he described as “unwearables made from modern materials,” consisted of strips of plastic held together by metal rings worn by barefoot models at a presentation in an upscale Paris hotel.

Jose Manuel Albesa, president of Puig’s beauty and fashion division, said, “Paco Rabanne magnetized the breach. Who else can make fashionable Parisian women clamor for dresses made of plastic and metal,” he said.
The designer teamed up with Spain’s Puig family in the late 1960s to release fragrances that served as a springboard for the company’s international expansion.
