WASHINGTON, Feb 3 (Reuters) – Hackers claiming responsibility for a devastating breach at financial data firm ION say a ransom has been paid, although they have declined to say how much the money was or provide any evidence that the money was handed over.
ION Group declined to comment on the statement. Lockbit made the claim to Reuters via its online chat account on Friday, but said it would provide details with “no way” he said. The FBI did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
Earlier on Friday, ION was removed from Lockbit’s extortion website, usually seen as a sign that victimized companies are holding out for ransom.
Brett Callow, a ransomware expert from New Zealand-based cyber security company Emsisoft, says: “Sacrifice delisting means more victims agree to negotiate or pay.”
Callow said there’s an outside chance that there’s another explanation for Lockbit’s apparent withdrawal.
