QUITO, Feb 11 (Reuters) – Ecuador’s state oil company Petroecuador said on Saturday it was losing about 3,500 barrels of crude oil a day due to “vandalism” at two of its blocks, citing recent local protests. .

The company said in a statement that members of the local community occupied the facilities of blocks 16 and 67 in Orellana province in the Amazon region of the country and closed the valve on the pipeline, stopping the flow of crude oil.

In addition, community members caused power cuts that resulted in wells being shut down. The company did not say when the site was occupied or how many days production has been affected so far.

The local community has not been consulted by Petroecuador on the new operation of the blocks and others social claims to be making demands. Protests began in late December.

Petroecuador took over production of the blocks earlier this year. Canadian New Stratus Energy previously operated the blocks.
