SEVILLE, Feb 12 (Reuters) – Late Spanish filmmaker Carlos Saura and French actress Juliette Binoche were honored with an international honor at the Spanish Film Academy’s Goya Awards on Saturday.

Saura, who died on Friday at the age of 91, was due to receive the academy’s prestigious Goya award at the annual ceremony.

He was honored posthumously and, amid applause, read the words his widow Eulalia Ramón Saura had written before her death: “I’m sorry I couldn’t be with you.”

The film’s creator led the revival of Spanish art cinema after decades of fascist dictatorship under Francisco Franco.

As Bestas, Galician for The Beasts and a tense thriller, won nine awards, including best film, director, actor and music.

Spanish movie star Penelope Cruz was nominated for Best Supporting Actress for her role in the housing-related film En Los Margenes. The category winner was Susi Sanchez for her role in Lullaby.
