MILAN, February 15 (Reuters) – In Italy bank branches will fall from 22,000 last year to about 16,000 in 2029, consulting firm Deloitte said on Wednesday as customers increasingly embrace digital banking.

In its report on the digital progress of banks, Deloitte predicts that online banking in Italy will penetrate from 45% in 2022 to 60% within 7 years.

The company ranks lenders on a scale ranging from “digital laggards” to “digital champions” based on their Digital Banking Maturity (DBM) score.

In general, the DBM of Italian banks 2018It has improved from the previous ranking in 2018 with two undisclosed lenders classified as digital champions.

Deloitte said this is due to a wide range of digital services that customers find relevant and better for users than the digital experience of their peers.

“Digital champions … also have better financial performance than other players, with a 1.5 percentage point increase in equity,” said Manuel Pincetti, Senior Digital Partner at Deloitte.
