LOS ANGELES, Feb 15 (Reuters) – Ant-Man Scott Lang and his allies in 2015’s Ant-Man origin story in other Marvel films and 2018They return to the big screen on Friday, years after the sequel. “Ant-Man and the Wasp.”
Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania is the first film in the fifth installment of Disney’s Marvel Cinematic Universe. This takes the superhero and his size-shifting powers to the Quantum Realm, a subatomic world where he faces new challenges.
Directed by Peyton Reed of The Mandalorian fame, the film stars Paul Rudd as Scott/Ant-Man, Evangeline Lilly as Hope van Dyne/The Wasp, Michelle Pfeiffer as Janet van Dyne and Michael Douglas as Hank Pym. The third installment adds Jonathan Majors as a new antagonist, Kang the Conqueror.
Lilly’s face lit up when asked about her first time seeing the film, which was shot in a circular studio with high-definition panels.

“When we were in Volume, all of a sudden there were thousands of LED screens that built the world for us, created the characters for us,” he said.
Reality melted away and brought him into the fantasy world that many kids grew up reading in Marvel comics, he noted.
Rudd said the Volume technology used to bring the set to life is like an LED screen covering the entire soundstage, where everything can be projected.
“It was the most complex, incredible thing I’ve ever seen, and that helps you because it gives you a sense, especially with something so specific, so imaginative and so unfamiliar in the environment.”
Disney artists gathered new environments, creatures, buildings and a whole internal history and logic to bring the Quantum Realm to life.
For Reed, being able to look at old science fiction books, comics, heavy metal magazines, movies, and things he loved as a child and as an adult was key to populating his Quantum Realm.
Reed told the team’s artists that no idea was too crazy because “anything can happen in a subatomic world.”
At the center of the immersive world, Majors believed Kang’s role was to inform Scott of what was at stake in the Quantum Realm and “what they were really up against.”
Despite the eye-catching technology, most critics gave the film mediocre reviews, resulting in a 55% “rotten” rating on Rotten Tomatoes.
The Daily Beast’s entertainment critic Nick Shager wrote, referring to the computer-generated imagery, that “Rudd is consumed by the consumerist CGI frenzy of his latest comic book extravaganza.”
