WARSAW, Feb 16 (Reuters) – Poles in double digits inflation although it reduced their income, they created long queues to buy donuts on “Fat Thursday”.

On the last Thursday before Lent, when Christians traditionally fast before Easter, Poles stuff their faces with donuts in a festival of caloric delight.

But according to BNP Paribas bank, the price of ingredients compared to a year ago 20-30% higher than in Warsaw hungry shoppers have had to fork out more for their favorite deep-fried delicacies.

Syliwa Tomaszkiewicz, 45, owner of the Zagozdzinski confectionery, said: “Last Fat Thursday, donuts cost 3.50 zlotys each (0.78 dollars) costs,” he said. “In August, we had to raise it to 1 zloty.”

Nevertheless, on Thursday, the line outside Tomaszkiewicz’s store stretched for hundreds of meters.

Dominika Maria, a 25-year-old student, said when asked how long she had been waiting: “I think about two hours looking at this line.”

For 73-year-old pensioner Jadwiga Stanyevska, it was important to keep the tradition of Fat Thursday alive.

“It’s really good because young people are continuing this tradition,” he said. “That’s why I really, really like it … because it’s not the hottest day today, but they’re putting up with it.”
