February 23 (Reuters) – Russia will continue to increase its focus on increasing its nuclear forces and begin mass deliveries of Zircon sea-launched hypersonic missiles, the president Vladimir Putin said Thursday.
In his address on the occasion of the Defender of the Fatherland holiday on Thursday Putin also said that Russia will continue to equip its armed forces with advanced equipment.
Putin made this statement two days after Russia announced that it would suspend the New START treaty, an arms control treaty signed with Washington. The treaty limits the number of nuclear warheads each country can deploy.
“As before, we will pay more attention to the strengthening of the nuclear triad,” Putin said, referring to land-based, sea-based and air-based nuclear missiles.
Putin said that this year, for the first time, Sarmat intercontinental ballistic missiles – a weapon capable of carrying multiple nuclear warheads – will be deployed.
