Fighting for Bakhmut, north of the regional capital Donetsk, has been so fierce that commanders on both sides have dubbed it a “meat grinder.”

“The most difficult situation remains in the direction of Bakhmut, where the enemy has suffered significant losses, but does not stop trying to encircle Bakhmut.

“In order to try to capture Bakhmut, the invaders used the most prepared units of the regular forces.”

‘STONE STAIRCASE’

Donetsk and Luhansk are two of the four regions that Russia has declared part of Russia, but neither of which it fully controls.

Bakhmut’s control would be a stepping stone for Russia to advance on two major cities in the Donetsk region it has long desired: Kramatorsk and Sloviansk.

Russia of Ukraine controls about a fifth, but has suffered a series of setbacks in recent months as Ukrainian forces have launched counterattacks using weapons from Western allies.

After those setbacks, Moscow reported increasing gains in recent weeks. Gromov did not elaborate on the latest situation on the battlefield, but said that Ukrainian forces will continue to fight until they push Russian troops across the border.

According to Gromov, Russia Ukraine keeps troops in the border regions of Bryansk and Kursk provinces to suppress its troops and prevent them from being sent to fight elsewhere.
