March 3 (Reuters) – Meta Platforms Inc ( META.O ) cut prices on virtual reality headsets in hopes of boosting demand for VR hardware as its bold bets on the metaverse struggled to make a big splash.

CEO Mark Zuckerberg on Friday social the media platform said in an Instagram post that its flagship Meta Quest Pro will be priced at $999, down from $1,499, while the Quest 2 256GB version will go down from $499 to $429.

The company cited lower Quest 2 sales as the reason behind a 17% drop in fourth-quarter revenue at its Reality Labs division, which includes VR-related offerings.

With outward-facing cameras that capture 3D live streaming of the physical environment and enable innovations like the ability to hang virtual paintings on a real-world wall, Quest Pro is aimed at designers, architects and other creative professionals.

Meta has of late sobered up its position in the metaverse and is focusing on cost savings. The company called 2023 the “Year of Efficiency” and predicted billions in cost savings this year.

While VR headsets have added more advanced capabilities recently, their adoption outside of the gaming community has been slow.

Last month, the world’s largest video game publisher Tencent has put its plans to enter VR hardware on hold while in talks to distribute its Meta Quest product line in China.
