LONDON, March 9 (Reuters) – A new musical about the life and career of legendary singer and songwriter Frank Sinatra will be staged in Birmingham, Britain, later this year.

“Sinatra The Musical” will debut at Birmingham Rep on September 23, marking the “Come Fly with Me” and “New York, New York” singer’s Big Britain coincides with the 70th anniversary of his tour and performs in this city.

The story begins on New Year’s Eve 1942, when the then 27-year-old Sinatra took the stage at New York’s Paramount Theater in the performance that catapulted him to success.

As he becomes a huge music star, “he struggles to balance the love of his wife, Nancy, with the demands and temptations of being America’s most popular singer,” producers said in a statement about the show’s plot.

The musical will look at the impact his relationship with actress Ava Gardner had on his career and how he staged “the biggest comeback in show business history”.

Sinatra’s daughter, Tina Sinatra, said, “I’m very proud of our new musical, and I’m especially excited that for the first time, we’re going to bring you a perspective on my father that you’ve never seen before,” in a statement.

Tony Award winner Joe DiPietro, “What’s New Pussycat?” and wrote the book “Memphis”.

“Growing up, my grandmother had two pictures hanging in her kitchen — Papa and Frank Sinatra. So to be able to sit down with Tina Sinatra and hear the stories of her father that no one else knew, and then be able to put those stories down. I think it’s going to be an unexpected and exciting new musical,” said DiPietro.

“We tell you how a man became a legend, and how a legend— of the day in the end – we’ll show you’re just a person.”

Sinatra, whose instantly recognizable voice won fans around the world with such classics as “My Way” and “Strangers in the Night,” died in 1998.

Sinatra The Musical, directed by Olivier and Tony Award-winning director and choreographer Kathleen Marshall, runs through October 28.
