VATICAN CITY, March 12 (Reuters) – Nicaraguan President Daniel Ortega has ordered the closure of the Vatican embassy in Managua and the Nicaraguan embassy in Rome.
Nicaragua signaled a “suspension” of diplomatic relations, days after Pope Francis compared the Nicaraguan government to a dictatorship.
A Vatican source said that while the closures do not automatically mean a complete severance of relations between Managua and the Holy See, they are serious steps toward that possibility.
