LONDON, March 24 (Reuters) – Artist duo Gilbert and George are bringing their vision of the world to a special new exhibition space in east London, with much of the program being shown free of charge in keeping with the ethos of “art for all”.
The Gilbert & George Centre, in the Spitalfields area of the city, is less than 5 minutes from the home and studio of their life and business partners.
“We have an audience and so they can see our work in a better, bigger way for the first time. Normally what you see in cities is limited, where they can see intense Gilbert and George feelings,” Gilbert, whose Italian full name is Gilbert Prousch, told Reuters on Friday.
“They live the art of Gilbert & George, which is our world view, our morals, our behavior and everything.”

The usually fit and laid-back duo met in 1967 while studying in London. They have been together ever since, making poignant pictures that tackle identity, race, poverty, and death, among others. 20They got married in 2008.
The new centre, a three-level gallery space converted from a former brewery building and operating as a registered charity, will open to the public on April 1 with its first free exhibition, The Paradisical Pictures.
The works sometimes feature a disembodied couple amid colorful psychedelic depictions of fruit, flowers, and leaves.
“Most people think of heaven after the party,” says George, 81. “Images appeal equally politely to those who believe in the afterlife and those who do not.”
Asked how their work has evolved over the decades, Gilbert, 79, said: “What we see today is different than what we saw 30, 40 years ago, and it’s scratching the surface of who we are as human beings today.”
George added of their success: “We’ve been very, very lucky in that regard. We say we’ve walked the streets of London, and now we’ve walked the streets of the world.”
