LAGOS, Feb 24 (Reuters) – Nigerian artist Adebayo Ayodeji is targeting children to play traditional instruments such as drums, which he worries could become extinct and erase an important aspect of culture in Africa’s most populous country.

In the megacity of Lagos, parents bring their children to drumming workshops twice a month to learn how to play the drums and understand their traditional significance.

In Nigeria, the drum is not only a musical instrument, but is also used in ceremonial events and ceremonies such as communicating with the gods and calling meetings in villages.

“We use it to revive our cultural values,” Ayodeji said, noting that most of the children had never seen a drum before.

“They haven’t played it before, and this is an opportunity to introduce them to it, so we’re using it to at least do some kind of evangelism—the evangelism of art,” Ayodeji said.
