The message of the representative of Ukraine before the NATO meeting: we expect a bold political solution

“Our ambition for the summit is quite pragmatic. We would like to combine two paths: practical cooperation and political context. In terms of practical cooperation, we expect to receive a strong all-round support package. As the NATO leaders explained to us, it would be more financial support and more orientation towards medium and long-term projects”, N. Galibarenko told Lithuanian journalists visiting Brussels on Friday.

Speaking about the political context, the ambassador emphasized that Ukraine expects clear guidelines on the way to the country’s accession to the alliance.

“We are not naive, we do not ask the alliance to tell us a specific date when Ukraine will become a member, but at the same time we do not think that repeating the open door policy of NATO is sufficient in our relations.

We have put several proposals on the table, how we could move forward in political decisions, so in the political dialogue we will see how all this develops when creating drafts at NATO headquarters”

N. Galibarenko emphasized that “for us in Vilnius, this is not just an ordinary summit where the same commitments will be confirmed again.”

“We would like to see a very bold political decision,” commented the ambassador.

When asked what would be the best security guarantee for Ukraine, she answered without question.

“The best security guarantee is Article 5 of NATO. This is clear, the president of Ukraine has also said several times that this is the best guarantee. Clearly, the idea of security guarantees prior to actual membership in the alliance is important to guard against any potential Russian aggression in the future. This is not only in the interest of Ukraine, but also of all EU countries”, added N. Galibarenko.
