With the support of the Heydar Aliyev Foundation and the organization of the Embassy of the Republic of Azerbaijan in Latvia, a solemn concert dedicated to the 100th anniversary of the birth of Heydar Aliyev, the founder of the independent state of Azerbaijan, outstanding politician and statesman, was held in Riga, the capital of Latvia.

“Report” was informed about this by the Embassy of Azerbaijan in Latvia.

It was reported that the concert was organized in the National Library of Latvia, which is one of the well-known cultural centers of Latvia and is considered one of the examples of Latvian modern architecture. Speaking at the event, Azerbaijan’s Ambassador to Latvia Elnur Sultanov said that 2023 was declared the “Year of Heydar Aliyev” by the Decree of the President of the Republic of Azerbaijan Ilham Aliyev, and the concert organized on this occasion was a significant event.

The ambassador noted that it is a clear example that the National Leader devoted his whole life to the people of Azerbaijan, to establishing Azerbaijan’s independence, establishing its statehood, and determining the national development strategy. He emphasized that as an outstanding statesman, he always instilled the ideas of freedom, independence, and national identity into the national consciousness of the people. It was noted that thanks to the continuous struggle of Heydar Aliyev, the people of Azerbaijan have successfully come out of the complex historical and political trials of the time, and today they have restored their territorial integrity and sovereignty, it is a celebration of the great life activity and legacy of the modern and strong Azerbaijani National Leader.

Sultanov emphasized that Heydar Aliyev laid the foundation of Azerbaijan’s independent and balanced foreign policy, including Azerbaijan-Latvia relations, and diplomatic relations were established between Azerbaijan and Latvia in 1994 when he was the President. Having gone through important stages of the relations between our countries, the ambassador pointed out that the first embassy of Azerbaijan in the Baltic region was opened in Latvia in 2005, and the Declaration of Strategic Partnership was signed in 2017, and the 30th anniversary of our bilateral relations will be celebrated in 2024.

Then the ambassador informed about the rich jazz traditions of Azerbaijan, the contribution of our famous jazz masters such as Vagif Mustafazade and Rafig Babayev to the world jazz culture by synthesizing jazz with mugam, which is included in the UNESCO non-cultural heritage list, and our national musical instruments, the tar and the drum.

In accordance with the program, the ethno jazz concert of Latvian and Azerbaijani musicians, which was performed together for the first time in Latvia, included the honored artists of Azerbaijan – tarzan Sahib Pashazade and guitarist Ruslan Huseynov, pianist Nijat Aslanov, percussionists Kamran Karimov and Hasan Bilalov, as well as Latvian musicians, saxophonist Zintis Zwarts and accordionist Rustam Bagirov successfully performed Azerbaijani folk music, jazz pieces, as well as works by Azerbaijani and Latvian composers. The concert attracted great interest from the audience.

The Embassy also donated rich and modern books published by the Heydar Aliyev Foundation and dedicated to Azerbaijani culture, art and music to the National Library of Latvia.

Heads and officials of Latvian state institutions, heads of diplomatic missions accredited in this country, representatives of academia, art, public circles, members of the Azerbaijani community living in Latvia, as well as students studying in Latvia took part in the event.
