In the morning of November 20, one of the old-familiar news for Azerbaijan was spread. Director of “AbzasMedia” Ulvi Hasanli disappeared on his way to the airport. Later it became known that he was detained by the police. Later, a search was conducted in the office of “AbzasMedia”, it was claimed that 40,000 euros were found. After that, Hasanli was charged under Article 206.3.2 (Smuggling by a group of people) and sentenced to 4 months of detention.
Who is Ulvi Hasanli?
He was born on August 10, 1987 in former Kirovabad (now Ganja).
Ulvi joined ADNA in 2005, but was removed from it in 2006 due to his political activities. Hasanli studied at Azerbaijan University of Tourism and Management in 2008-2013.
Ulvi Hasanli worked in the Dalga Youth Movement in the 2000s and was the chairman of the organization. He was the founder and chairman of the Free Youth Organization established in 2011, and resigned from this position in November 2013.
Hasanli, who is also a member of the National Council of Democratic Forces, then became a member of the NIDA Civil Movement. He later became a member of the Board of Directors of the NIDA Civil Movement.
Ulvi Hasanli is the director of the online publication “AbzasMedia”, founded in 2016.
“AbzasMedia” is mostly known for investigating the corrupt practices of the ruling family and government officials.
Although Hasanli was suspended from military service due to health reasons in 2017, he was detained by the military police at the hospital where he went for a newly scheduled examination in October. He was sent directly to the military unit in Barda district without being allowed to say goodbye to his family.
Ulvi Hasanli took part in the 2020 parliamentary elections in Azerbaijan as a neutral candidate.
In June 2023, Hasanli was detained by the Azerbaijani police at the Binagadi District Police Station for reporting on the events of Soyudlu. He was also detained during a flash mob held by a group of political activists at the US Embassy that year.
On November 20, 2023, Ulvi Hasanli was detained by the police. He says he was tortured after being detained. Ulvi Hasanli is charged with Article 206.3.2 of the Criminal Code (Smuggling by a group of persons).
Institutions such as “Amnesty International”, the Committee for the Protection of Journalists, and the International Press Institute called Ulvi Hasanli’s arrest illegal and demanded his release.
“AbzasMedia” is mostly known for its activity investigating corruption facts of the ruling family and state institutions. To date, the site has attracted dozens of investigations into the corruption of Ilham Aliyev and his family members, former officials, Beyler Ayyubov, Ali Nagiyev, Jeyhun Bayramov and others. The media organization also questions the lack of transparency in the construction works in Karabakh.
