Pashinyan rejected Aliyev’s proposals, announced a blow to the peace negotiations
According to Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan, the statements coming from Baku in recent days are a serious blow to the peace process.
As Armenpress reports, Pashinyan said this on Saturday, January 13, at a meeting with members of his “Civil Contract” party.
“I regard Baku’s recent statements as a serious blow to the peace process. Why? For several reasons. The first reason is as follows: we have publicly agreed several times that peace between Armenia and Azerbaijan, as well as the delimitation and demarcation of borders, should be based on the Almaty Declaration of December 1991.
This means that Armenia and Azerbaijan recognize each other’s territorial integrity taking into account the following: the territory of the Republic of Armenia is exactly the same as the territory of the Armenian SSR, and the territory of Azerbaijan is exactly the same as the territory of the Azerbaijan SSR.
The Alma-Ata Declaration states that the Soviet Union has disintegrated, and the Soviet republics that have joined the Alma-Ata Declaration are gaining independence, and the administrative boundaries between the Soviet states become state borders.
This means that the process of demarcating the border is not limited to creating a border. That is, our delimitation commissions should not create a border, but should restore the borders that existed in 1991, when the Alma-Ata Declaration was adopted,” the Prime Minister said.
According to him, these agreements between Armenia and Azerbaijan were recorded both in the quadripartite declaration adopted following the meeting in Prague on October 6, 2022, and during the meeting held in Sochi in the same month, and during the meeting held in Brussels on July 15, 2023.
“Why do I regard Azerbaijan’s recent statements as a blow? Because what they say at the highest level directly contradicts this logic and this agreement,” Pashinyan said.
At the same time, he noted that Azerbaijan is trying to make territorial claims against Armenia, which are “absolutely unacceptable.”
Thus, Pashinyan responded to the statements of Ilham Aliyev, which he expressed in an interview with Baku TV channels. Their essence was that if Yerevan did not agree to an unimpeded passage from Azerbaijan to Nakhchivan, Baku will not make any agreements with Yerevan and will not withdraw troops from its positions after November 2020.
