The Penitentiary Service considers the journalist’s statements unfounded

On June 7, they put two women in a penalty cell at the Baku Pretrial Detention Center and kept one of them in handcuffs for 3 hours.

Sevinj Vagifgizi, the imprisoned editor-in-chief of “AbzasMedia” said this in a telephone conversation with his mother, Ofelia Maharramova.

According to Sevinj Vagifgizy, those women were insulted by the deputies of the head of the detention center named Jeyhun and Ahad:

“They told the girls that if you complain, we will drag you by the hair. The supervisor named Mahir, placed over the women, threatens them with torture..

Ofelia Maharramova told Meydan TV that after saying these things, Sevinj Vagifqizi’s phone was disconnected.

Maharramova is worried that Sevinj Vagifqizi will be subjected to pressure.

Meydan TV sent a request to the public relations department of the Penitentiary Service.

The Penitentiary Service said that these claims are completely unfounded:

“Not only in the last days, but also during the last 1 year, there have been no cases of transfer of the women detained in the Baku Pretrial Detention Center to the penalty room for violating the rules of the regime.”

“The personal safety of the persons detained in the Baku Pretrial Detention Center is ensured, their rights and legal interests are protected, they are not subjected to pressure, torture and inhumane treatment by the staff and other detainees. Such cases were not recorded during the surprise inspections and monitoring carried out by local and international law enforcement organizations.” – was mentioned in the response to the survey.

Director of the website Ulvi Hasanli, his deputy Mahammad Kekalov, editor-in-chief Sevinj Vagifqizi, investigative journalist Hafiz Babali and Nargiz Absalamova were arrested in the criminal case related to the publication “AbzasMedia”, known for its corruption investigations.

They were charged under Article 206.3.2 of the Criminal Code (smuggling by a group of people).

On November 20, the office of “AbzasMedia” was searched.

It was claimed that 40,000 euros were found in the site’s office.

Ulvi Hasanli said that there was no money there, that 40,000 euros were deposited in the office by those who claimed to have found it.

None of the named journalists plead not guilty, they told AbzasMedia that they were punished for investigations related to the business and corruption of a number of officials, including members of the President’s family.
