A two-year-old fell into a coma after tasting alcohol: the worst suspicions fall on the parents

“We can confirm the fact that the mentioned minor is currently still being treated at Kaunas clinics, but we cannot provide more detailed information because we do not have the consent of the parents,” said a representative of Kaunas clinics. Ieva Jankauskienė.

It turned out that the two-year-old was most likely poisoned with alcohol. Law enforcement is investigating whether he was specially tricked or whether he drank alcohol accidentally.

“Late on Sunday evening, the officers received a message from the medics that a minor with possible alcohol poisoning was delivered to the medical facility. Our officers also went to the scene and determined that both parents had an average degree of drunkenness,” said the Kaunas police representative. Odeta Vaitkevičienė.

Neighbors who tried to calm the family heard that there was a party at home, and asked to add music.

Child rights protection specialists also responded to the emergency situation, there are three children in the family.

“We took care of the child, his safe environment, besides this child there were several other children, this is a safe environment for all children”, – assured the head of the Kaunas Child Rights Protection Department Anželika Vežbaviciūtė.
The family has been known to child rights defenders for some time and they have been working with it.

“Help was provided to the family, now it will be necessary to review the effectiveness of that help with social partners, so that the children return to a safe environment, so that such incidents do not happen again,” said A. Vežbaviciūtė.

The police have not yet started the pre-trial investigation, the parents have not yet been questioned while they are sober. “Currently, the circumstances of the incident are being clarified in accordance with Article 139 of the Criminal Code regarding minor health impairment due to carelessness,” said O. Vaitkevičienė.

While the little one is in the hospital, the other children were handed over to relatives.

“In this case, for all the children, we find those persons whom the children know and trust, who are able to take care of them properly, then we assess the child’s situation, we also listen to the parents when we can listen to them”, explained A. Vežbaviciūtė.

Such child neglect can be punishable by imprisonment for up to one year.
