Fazil Gasymov on 21-day hunger strike in pretrial detention center

Doctoral student of Istanbul University, economist Fazil Gasymov is on hunger strike for 21 days in Baku pre-trial detention center-1.

Lawyer Araz Nurmamedov told after meeting with him in Baku SIZO-1.

According to him, Gasymov is still kept in a regular cell.

“He takes only water. He is lethargic, his organism is severely weakened. Nevertheless, he intends to continue his hunger strike,” the lawyer said.

Rovshana Rahimova, another lawyer of Gasymov, told that she filed an appeal against the 28 June decision of the Narimanov district court of Baku to refuse to transfer Gasymov to house arrest.

She also appealed to the leadership of the penitentiary service to transfer Gasymov to a medical institution of the department.

At the same time, the penitentiary service has not responded to requests to comment on reports of Gasymov’s hunger strike.

Recall that Fazil Gasymov, a doctoral student at Istanbul University and economist, was detained last August in Turkey and brought to Azerbaijan, where he was accused of making counterfeit money. Pro-government media reported at the time that his arrest was linked to the case of opposition politician Gubad Ibadoglu, who faced similar charges.

Since 14 June Gasymov has been on hunger strike to protest against unjustified criminal prosecution and torture during pretrial detention.
