Fazil Gasimov, a doctoral student from Istanbul University, who was detained in Turkey and brought to Azerbaijan in August 2023, has reportedly been on a hunger strike for 84 days while in detention.

Rufat Safarov, the human rights organization Defense Line executive director, disclosed this information, raising alarms about Gasimov’s deteriorating health.

According to Safarov, Gasimov’s weight has plummeted to 37 kilograms as a result of the prolonged hunger strike, which has now stretched into its third month. “He has not eaten for 84 days, surviving only on liquids. His body has weakened to the point where he is wearing winter clothes in this hot weather, and he cannot walk independently,” Safarov stated, emphasizing the gravity of the situation.

Gasimov’s lawyer, Rovshana Rahimli, confirmed that his condition is critical, noting that he now requires the use of a wheelchair. The lawyer reiterated that the charges against Gasimov, related to counterfeit currency, are baseless and politically motivated.

The case also involves Gubad Ibadoglu, economist and former chairman of the Azerbaijan Democracy and Welfare Party. Ibadoglu was detained in July 2023 and accused of possessing counterfeit money, a charge he denies, claiming the evidence was planted. Gasimov is accused of providing fake currency to Ibadoglu.

The trial of Fazil Gasimov is currently being heard at the Baku Serious Crimes Court. Gasimov has alleged that he was subjected to mistreatment during the investigation, including physical abuse and threats to coerce false statements.
