Transport between Azerbaijan and Armenia will operate in a simplified mode

“Communication between Azerbaijan and Armenia will work in a simplified mode, and there can be no uncertainty about the sovereignty of the Armenian territory.”

According to RFE / RL’s Armenian Service, The statement came from Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov at a joint press conference with his Armenian counterpart Ararat Mirzoyan in Yerevan on June 9.

Lavrov arrived in Yerevan on June 8 for a two-day working visit. A meeting of the Council of Ministers of the Collective Security Treaty Organization, of which Armenia is a member, will be held in Yerevan tomorrow.

“As you know, a railway route has been agreed between Armenia and Azerbaijan. At present, the agreement on the car route is nearing completion. It will be simplified, but it will definitely be based on the recognition of the sovereignty of the territory of Armenia, because there can be no ambiguity – no uncertainty. These are practical things about building local infrastructure, so it’s best to measure here ten times before cutting. And we have an opinion that both our Azerbaijani and Armenian partners take this position, “Lavrov said.

However, the source said that Lavrov did not clarify what the “simplified regime” means.

Touching upon the restoration of relations with Azerbaijan at the press conference, Armenian Foreign Minister Ararat Mirzoyansa said that the opening of relations in the region could create new opportunities.

Mirzoyan expressed hope that the commission at the level of deputy prime ministers would achieve a positive result in this regard.

Mirzoyan said the meeting with Lavrov was constructive and sincere.

The sides exchanged views on a possible document on the normalization of Armenian-Azerbaijani relations, demarcation and security of borders, as well as regional and international security issues, RFE / RL’s Armenian Service reported.

In the autumn of 2020, Azerbaijan regained control of part of Nagorno-Karabakh and 7 surrounding regions, which were occupied by the Armenian army for almost 30 years during the Second Karabakh War.

By the agreement of November 10 of the same year (between Azerbaijan, Armenia and Russia), the fighting was stopped, and Russian peacekeepers were deployed on the line of contact between the Lachin corridor and the Armenian community in Karabakh and the Azerbaijani army.

However, no final peace agreement has been signed between the parties yet.
