Savelyev: Karabakh issue was mentioned especially during the meeting with Sahiba Gafarova

“The visit of the Chairman of the Milli Majlis Sahiba Gafarova to Moscow was a logical continuation of mutual Russian-Azerbaijani visits at the highest level, but, above all, it marked the resumption of personal interaction between the politicians of the two countries after the pandemic.” Head of the Russia-Azerbaijan inter-parliamentary friendship group, Dmitry Savelyev Dmitry Savelyev, told the Russian Bureau of Report.

“Personal meetings of the speaker of the Milli Majlis Sahiba Gafarova with the Chairman of the State Duma Vyacheslav Volodin and the Chairman of the Council of Federations Valentina Matviyenko not only became an important step in strengthening inter-parliamentary cooperation but also demonstrated the focus of our countries on intensifying cooperation on important issues. Expansion of inter-parliamentary cooperation, including an agreement on the upcoming visit of Vyacheslav Volodin to Azerbaijan, support for the expansion of cultural, humanitarian, economic, scientific, and educational ties – this is not a complete list of issues that were raised at the meeting of the leaders of the parliaments of our countries.”

The Russian MP also touched upon the issue of the Nagorno-Karabakh settlement: “The need for a peaceful settlement of the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict within the framework of international law was particularly strong. The meeting between Sahiba Gafarova and Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov discussed this topic in detail. It became a key topic in Sahiba Khanum’s speech at the Federation Council’s open meeting.”

“I am sure that visits to this level give a powerful impetus to many creative processes in cooperation between Russia and Azerbaijan in many areas. And inter-parliamentary cooperation, designed to bring legislative support to these processes, plays a special role in strengthening and expanding ties between our countries,” Savelyev concluded.
