The last one is in 2023 to the global ranking according to Azerbaijan 57th in the world, among former Soviet republics Russia and has the third strongest army after Ukraine, and the most powerful armed forces in the South Caucasus.

Of course, “army rating” is a relative indicator. They don’t measure their strength by making everyone fight! For example, the 2nd place in that rating Russia army standing in the 15th position Ukraine It has not been able to break the resistance of the Armed Forces for a year. But in any case, UNin the list of 90-91 places in the world according to both economy and population Azerbaijan for this indicator is a success in the conditions where the power factor still plays a major role in politics. Especially after the collapse of the USSR 20In the 00s military the steps taken in construction, the continuous increase of the combat readiness of the army, and the equipping with the most modern weapons have a great role.

When looking for the root of this success, I would go further – to 1918-1919. To those times when not only a rifle to give to a soldier, but also a patava to wear on his feet was not found. A soldier It was not easy to find! In tsarist Russia, Azerbaijanis were not taken to the army, men were taught to take up arms. It was at that time that the youths of our Minister of Defense, General of Artillery Samad Bey Mehmandarov military wrote to encourage service:

“More than a hundred years from the Russian yoke free it is necessary to remind the Turkish people that we have not always been subordinated to others, we have even dictated our will to Europe and Asia.

National the army was just being formed, and everyone who was not only faithful and honest to his service, but also who could shoot a rifle and play a sword was valuable. Moreover, whatever you reached for, scarcity was felt: the most orderly military in our unit – in the First Tatar Cavalry Regiment, one horse, one gun, one sword, and one saddle were assigned to each of the three horses. There was a lack of clothes, because there were no overcoats, 250 Lezgi shawls were distributed to more than 600 cavalry in winter. There was no stock of shoes. All the property of the former Russian army was left to Armenia and Georgia. Azerbaijan There was no response from Tbilisi to his request to buy a part of this property at a reasonable price. Therefore, the few leathers and soles that were in the warehouses in Baku were distributed to the soldiers by order of Mehmandarov, so that the soldiers could make boots and shoes for themselves. Even conscripts who brought clothes with them were paid extra money for old overcoats, pants, shoes…

Khanmirza Malikahmadoglu, who lives with her old mother in the village of Saray, was one of the first to vote for military service. After completing the training, he immediately started serving in the Tatar cavalry regiment.

In February 1919, Khanmirze was told that his mother, who was left alone in the village, fell ill news they gave A soldier got permission from the regimental commander and went to visit Sara – his mother. Seeing her son, the old woman’s eyes lighted up, her knees got tired, she got out of bed for a few days. But somehow, Khanmirza himself fell ill. Although the mother tried hard, she could not save her son. A soldier passed away at home. Before his death, Khanmirza asked his mother not to forget, to return his soldier’s uniform to the military unit as soon as he was mourning, there are many in the regiment who need clothing.

After the burial, the grieving mother took Khanmirza’s clothes and went to the city. He didn’t know where to go, who to look for, but he had to fulfill his son’s will. After asking around, he found the military unit, and when he approached the gate, his feet did not move. Right there, he sat down on the stone, pressed his son’s clothes to his chest, and began to cry.

When the guards at the gate saw an old woman in military uniform and boots, crying in front of the military unit, they immediately called the officer on duty. news they gave…

When Minister of Defense Samad Bey Mehmandarov heard this story, he was interested in the identity of the deceased and how he served in the regiment. The commanders said that Khanmirza Malikahmadoglu was a soldier distinguished by his discipline, cleanliness and hard work. Mehmandarov was deeply moved by the cavalryman’s loyalty to his army and his elderly mother’s actions. On March 3, the minister signed order No. 130 on the army. He ended that order with these sentences:

“The death of such a cavalryman is a great loss to the unit he served. I draw everyone’s attention to the fact that until the moment of his death, Khanmirza Malikahmadoglu did not forget that he was obliged to return all service property to his share. His old mother, despite being very poor, was able to fulfill her son’s will. May God bless our Motherland with more than such pure people.”

National after reading this order, which testifies to the hardships and great sacrifices our army was created, I wanted to visit the grave of the soldier who killed the 64-year-old general who had gone through two military campaigns and three wars. I took a historian friend and his palace student who knew the Arabic alphabet and headed for the village.

Execution representatives of the authorities and Saray municipality asked for time to “investigate the issue”. Indeed, they tried to investigate, but could not find a trace in the documents.

Village the elders did not reach the black either. In fact, it was not so easy to find a “well-established” palace here: after the landslide of the 1950s village when it was moved 3-4 kilometers southeast of its historical place, the majority of the local population had dispersed to other settlements. I’m still the last 10– Not to mention the palaces that construction companies have made from second places in 15 years.

Assessing the situation, my historian friend and I realized that our only hope is a student who knows the Arabic alphabet. As advised by the elders, we went to the old cemetery.

The ancient cemetery is located on a hill, far from the Palace. We went from one grave to another, and the student was looking at the names and dates written on the headstones, but he was not always successful: some of the inscriptions were damaged by time, some of the headstones sank into the ground. The sides of some graves were opened, and the soil ran away from under the feet of the people. My historian friend slipped and rolled into one of these graves. We took it out together and cleaned it up. We had to stop the search and return to the village.

In the palace, municipal workers and elders promised that if they could learn something about the soldier’s family, news they will deliver, they took our phone number.

A long time has passed since that day. There is no news from the palace, I am busy with other things. However, every time I read the news about the successes of our army, the increase in combat readiness and the improvement of equipment, the cavalryman Khanmirza Malikahmadoglu, his old mother and also general I remember the words of Samad Bey Mehmandarov:

“Even if we are not alive, we will have an independent Azerbaijan. Still Azerbaijan our tricolor, moon and star flag will fly above his head. Our people are appreciative people. In any case, future generations will remember us.”
