The Passing of Time of Maurice Lacroix Watches

Starting in 1961, Maurice Lacroix watches began as a small privately owned business. Maurice Lacroix was not officially recognized as a true watch manufacturer until 2001. Although the company is fairly young, their watches have come to be known worldwide for their stunning displays, including their retrograde displays, moon phase indications and chronographs.

Beginning its roots in Saignelegier, a municipality of the Canton of Jura in Switzerland, the company began in 1961. Throughout the next fourteen years the manufacturer developed from a private distributor solely in Switzerland, to releasing their first model in the country of Austria. After the introduction in Austria, many other European countries soon followed.

The company saw the acquisition of several other countries among their clientele within the years of 1976 through 1987. Bringing the total number of countries in which their watches were distributed to seven, Maurice Lacroix slowly began to open up a global market. Spain, Australia, Great Britain, Germany and the Netherlands were the next countries to purchase their products after Austria.

After success in several different countries and an influx of profit, the company was able to secure a permanent casing facility in Saignelegier. With this acquisition The company would be able to maximize income and use such profits to expand into more countries. They used the abilities of their new facility to expand their clientele to the international level.

Soon the countries of the Far East and South Pacific Region of Asia, as well as the Near and Middle East were introduced to Maurice Lacroix watches in 1989 and 1990. With growing business in the Near and Middle East and an established selling in Malaysia, Thailand, Singapore, Japan, Hong Kong and Saudi Arabia, they had become a major manufacturer. The increase in revenue from these new countries led to new developments in their Saignelegier facilities.

The early and mid 1900’s witnessed the modernization of the Saignelegier facility. Throughout the history of Maurice Lacroix, the Saignelegier facility would undergo many renovations. Soon after, Maurice Lacroix would be viewing the United States as a new client of their watches. Over the next few years Maurice Lacroix increased the size and distribution of previous facilities due to the increasing demand of international clients.

In 1999 the Saignelegier facility was expanded for the 2nd time. In 2001 it once again saw improvements done to it as Maurice Lacroix officially had its own legal identity. Soon after expanding its Saignelegier facilities for the third time, Maurice Lacroix sought to open subsidiaries elsewhere.

Great Britain was bestowed the honor of its own subsidiary in 2002. Four years later, in 2006, the company had acquired all the necessities to become an exclusive manufacture brand. In 2008 the company made history by introducing the first mechanical watch with a memory function, the Memoire 1.
