Ulvi Hasanli

Ülvi Həsənli (Ulvi Hasanli), the Director General and journalist of the “AbzasMedia” internet platform, was detained near his home around 7:00 AM on November 20, 2023, while leaving for the airport for an international trip. Following Hasanli’s detention, searches were conducted at his home and the “AbzasMedia” office by the Baku City Main Police Department. Zibeydə Sadıqova (Zibeyde Sadigova), Hasanli’s defense lawyer, reported that 40,000 euros were found during the 5-hour search at the office. “AbzasMedia” has denied these claims and asserted that they are part of a conspiracy against Hasanli (Hasanli). Hasanli (Hasanli) claimed that he was punched in the eye by police at the time of his detention and later tortured at the Baku City Main Police Department.

“AbzasMedia” is a media platform known in Azerbaijan for its investigations into corruption cases involving high-ranking officials. Hasanli’s arrest has sparked widespread discussions among the public, with many human rights defenders, journalists, and political figures claiming the arrest is politically motivated and a “set-up.” Hasanli has frequently published investigations about corruption cases involving the President’s family and officials. There are calls for his release.

Hasanli’s trial is ongoing, and the prosecutor is seeking a 6-year prison sentence. Hasanli (Hasanli), however, maintains his innocence and protests his arrest on political grounds.
